One of the highlights of the World Karate Union Hall of Fame weekend is that all day Saturday, Grandmasters and Masters from many systems conduct seminars. These seminars are 30 minutes in length and offer a lot of hands-on training. As Karate 5 has been a proponent of cross training since the '70's, this was right up our alley. Grandmaster Delaney of Modern Arnis fame started the day off with his seminar and Karate 5 immediately followed with some empty hand techniques that were based on Modern Arnis principles. The Karate 5 seminar team consisted of Master Willie G. Wilson, Master William Mason, Sensei Daryl Cox and Instructor Anston Wilson. Our aim was to show that certain principles are common to any art. One thing that makes Modern Arnis so unique, is that you don't have to drop anything you are doing in whatever art you practice, you just keep adding "layers". Master Wilson also used an inexperienced practicioner, Colonel Mark A. Costa, ( U. S. Marines) to show that the principles of Modern Arnis are quite manageable in a short period of time. Colonel Costa was an apt student and the point that Master Wilson intended to make, was quickly understood. The Karate 5 team was well received and we have had many compliments from various styles and systems. Since we are "students of the art", that will motivate us to train harder.
