The Karate Five Dojo was founded by five of Master Harold Long’s first generation students. These were Willie Garfield Wilson, Melbert Lee Sr., Fredrick Brabson Sr., William Faulkner, and Linda Wilson (Willie's spouse). The Dojo was founded with the blessings and encouragement of Master Harold Long “to promote and teach Isshinryu to the inner city youth of Knoxville, Tennessee.”

The original “Five” founders have evolved through the years to a dojo with black belts highly respected,  well recognized and honored in the martial arts circles and regularly attend, participate and sponsor martial arts tournaments, seminars and shiais.

Over the years--decades, the Masters and their students have been inducted into the IHOF and the WKU HOF.  Masters Msarsa (K-5 Dojo Sensei), Wilson and Lee Sr., have earned multiple inductions in several martial arts halls of fame...among which is the Isshinryu Karate Association (IIKA) Board of Directors. Master Msarsa is an emeritus IIKA Board member, Isshinryu Hall of Fame Board Member and one of the pioneers of Isshinryu.  Masters Msarsa, Wilson, Lee Sr., Faulkner and Brabson were "first generation" black belts of Master Harold Long.

In later years, Clarence Allen (Fallen Warrior) replaced Linda Wilson and Jon Whitehead replaced Fredrick Brabson.  After Clarence Allen passed away, Daryl Cox was elected to replace Allen.

The Dojo is located in the Oakland Community Center. The Dojo doors are open to all willing to be a part of a martial arts program that is not only physical demanding but also teaches hard work, honor, loyalty, discipline, and commitment.

Students who cannot afford to pay dues are as welcome as those who do pay. The presence of the dojo in the inner city brings a very positive influence to the community.

Junior Instructor Youth Leadership Team

Karate Five is proud of its rising young leadership exemplified in our Dojo by three of our students--two recently promoted to the Instructors.  CJ Burnett and Marcus Campbell were promoted to Ni Dan (2nd) Degree Black Belt on December 15, 2017.  They have earned their place on the Karate Five Dojo Leadership Team and the title of "Instructor."

In August 2017 Andrew Gaff, brown belt, was promoted to the Youth Leadership Team. Before their promotion, he served with CJ Burnett and Marcus Campbell.  All these young students have proven their commitment to  Karate Five over the years since they were very young students.

As did CJ Burnett and Marcus Campbell, Andrew has shown a willingness to work with the students and assist the Leadership staff. These responsibilities may include but not be limited to assistng students and participants with tournament warmups, seminars and workshop activities and setup and providing training to younger students and an attitude to help Leadership wherever assistance is needed.

Over the years young leaders such as Andrew's skills in the martial arts have earned the respect and attention of his Karate Five peers for his loyalty, hard work and commitment. Karate Five is proud to recognize and award such loyalty and commitment as an example to other students.  Andrew possesses the certificates, recognition and awards to prove this meritous position.
